ETIM product classification in various industries

ETIM was originally founded for the electrical industry. The association has since expanded into new branches and now consists of five sectors.

The working groups and product classes at ETIM are divided into different sectors, with the sectors representing different industries. With the help of the division into sectors, the working groups in the countries can organise themselves optimally and thus also decide which product class terms, characteristics, values and synonyms need to be translated.

All ETIM data is maintained and further developed in the international ETIM database, the Classification Management Tool (CMT). Everyone has free access to the database. While ETIM initially only contained classes for products from the electrical industry, it now comprises five sectors, whereby each class can be assigned to one or more sectors.

  • Electrical sector: Has the abbreviation "E" in the Classification Management Tool and is called "Electrotechnical" there.

  • Plumbing - Heating - Air Conditioning (HVAC) sector: Has the abbreviation "W" in the Classification Management Tool and is called "HVAC and plumbing".

  • Tools - Hardware - Site equipment (WEBA) sector: Has the abbreviation "T" in the Classification Management Tool and is called "Tools, hardware and site supplies".

  • Building materials sector: Has the abbreviation "B" in the Classification Management Tool and is called "Building materials" there.

  • Shipbuilding sector: Has the abbreviation "M" in the Classification Management Tool and is called "Shipbuilding" there.

Not every sector is utilised and further developed in all 24 ETIM countries. The Shipbuilding sector, for example, is used exclusively in the Netherlands, as it is only used there.

ITEK is the official staff unit for the SHK and digital interfaces sector and, in collaboration with Heiko Dehne, for the building materials sector. If you have any further questions about ETIM, please do not hesitate to contact us.
