Innovative document exchange between industry and wholesale

The digitalization of processes and the electronic exchange of business documents in conjunction with EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) are playing an increasingly important role in today's world.

With the introduction of mandatory e-invoicing in Germany at the beginning of this year, the topic of electronic document exchange and EDI standards has once again come into focus. The aim is to drive forward digitization and increase the efficiency of business processes. Switching to structured electronic formats reduces the manual processing effort, minimizes errors and cuts costs.

But what does EDI actually mean?

EDI refers to the general electronic exchange of data. This involves the exchange of business documents such as invoices, orders or shipping notifications in a structured format. The EDIFACT standard format is based on EDI. EDIFACT (Electronic Data Interchange For Administration, Commerce and Transport) is one of the most widely used standards for exchanging data across industries and internationally. The standard is very general and is further subdivided into several industry-specific standards, also known as subsets. These include the EDITEC subset for the HVAC industry and EDILEKTRO for the electrical industry.

The benefits of digitizing and automating business processes through the integration of EDI are manifold. In day-to-day business, these include:

  • Automation: business documents such as orders or invoices are transferred without media discontinuity, eliminating the need for manual processing steps.
  • Error minimization: Standardized formats guarantee precise and consistent data transfer.
  • Increased efficiency: Faster processing of documents improves processes between industry and wholesale.
