Standardized data structure in the electrical industry

The increasing complexity of products and the associated data makes the use of standards ever more important. The standardized catalog data exchange format BMEcat is widely used in the electrical industry.

BMEcat was developed in 1999 and is a standard for the exchange of catalog data such as product-classified master data and multimedia data in the B2B sector. BME stands for “Bundesverband Materialwirtschaft, Einkauf und Logistik e.V” and the abbreviation “cat” is the English term for catalog.

The use of the standard ensures the exchange of data in a uniform XML structure, which reduces potential misunderstandings and sources of error.

The smooth and structured exchange of data is particularly beneficial for the e-commerce sector. The data quality of the product data is improved by the BMEcat standard and is further enhanced by the classification according to ETIM. The standardized and comprehensive data delivery enables faster and easier searching and filtering of products, which leads to greater findability and thus to higher sales opportunities.
